Armadillidium maculatum "Zebra" is one of the most popular and recognizable isopods in the hobby, loved for its bold black-and-white striping. It is hardy, beginner-friendly, fast-breeding, and ideal for both bioactive setups and display colonies.
Enclosure:
Provide a well-ventilated container with a substrate of flake soil, sphagnum moss, and plenty of leaf litter. Include cork bark, bark flats, and rocks for hiding and climbing. "Zebra" is moderately surface-active and enjoys structured enclosures.
Temperature & Humidity:
Maintain temperatures between 70-75°F. "Zebra" prefers moderate humidity (60-70%) with a moisture gradient—keep one side moist and one side drier. Good airflow will help keep the enclosure healthy.
Feeding:
Feed a base of decaying leaf litter and soft hardwoods. Supplement regularly with isopod diet, fish flakes, shrimp pellets, and fresh vegetables or fruit. Protein helps support healthy breeding and growth.
Behavior:
