Oniscus asellus "Skirted" Isopod Care Guide

Oniscus asellus "Skirted" is a beautiful morph of the common Oniscus asellus, featuring an extended “skirt” or flared edges along its body segments. This hardy and moderately sized isopod is perfect for bioactive setups or for keepers wanting a unique display species.

Enclosure:
Provide a well-ventilated container with a substrate of flake soil, sphagnum moss, and plenty of leaf litter. Include cork bark and bark pieces for hiding and surface activity. "Skirted" is moderately surface-active and enjoys structured environments.

Temperature & Humidity:
Maintain temperatures between 68-75°F. "Skirted" prefers higher humidity (75-85%) with a good moisture gradient—one side moist, one side slightly drier. Mist regularly to maintain humidity.

Feeding:
Feed a base of decaying leaf litter and soft hardwoods. Supplement with isopod diet, fish flakes, shrimp pellets, and fresh vegetables or fruit. Protein enhances growth and breeding.

Behavior:
"Skirted" isopods are moderately active and will be more visible as the colony matures. They breed steadily and are excellent for display colonies or for bioactive vivariums needing a larger, attractive cleanup species.
