Armadillidium officinalis "Sicily" Isopod Care Guide

Armadillidium officinalis "Sicily" is a sleek, fast-moving isopod species with a smooth, shiny appearance and a strong appetite for decaying matter. It is one of the more active Armadillidium species, well-suited for display colonies and cleanup crews in bioactive setups.

Enclosure:
Provide a well-ventilated container with a substrate of flake soil, sphagnum moss, and plenty of leaf litter. Include cork bark, bark flats, and rockwork for hiding and climbing. This species loves to roam and will appreciate open areas as well.

Temperature & Humidity:
Maintain temperatures between 72-78°F. "Sicily" prefers moderate humidity (60-70%) with a clear moisture gradient—one side moist, one side drier. Good airflow is important, as this species is more tolerant of drier conditions than many Armadillidium.

Feeding:
Feed a staple of decaying leaf litter and soft hardwoods. Supplement with isopod diet, fish flakes, shrimp pellets, and fresh vegetables or fruit. Protein enhances breeding and colony growth.

Behavior:
"Sicily" isopods are very active, fast movers, and breed well under proper conditions. They make a great display species due to their speed and visibility and are also highly effective as part of a cleanup crew in bioactive vivariums.
