Niambia capensis "African Cape" Isopod Care Guide

Niambia capensis "African Cape" isopods are a small, fast-moving, and highly adaptable species. They are a great choice for bioactive enclosures or for keepers wanting a prolific cleanup crew.

Enclosure:
Provide a well-ventilated container with a mix of flake soil, leaf litter, and sphagnum moss. Add cork bark or bark pieces for cover. They enjoy both the substrate surface and hiding underneath objects.

Temperature & Humidity:
Maintain temperatures between 72-78°F. They prefer moderate humidity (about 70-80%) with some drier areas for choice. A moisture gradient in the enclosure will allow them to self-regulate.

Feeding:
These isopods are excellent detritivores. Feed a base of decaying leaf litter and soft hardwoods, supplemented with isopod diet, fish flakes, and small amounts of fresh vegetables. Occasional protein (such as dried shrimp) supports healthy breeding.

Behavior:
"African Cape" isopods are highly active and breed rapidly when conditions are right. They tend to be more surface active than many smaller species, making them fun to observe and excellent as bioactive tank janitors.
